BEST BELGIUM DANCERS PROFILES :
In Belgian
Dance History has been beginning of a fascinating
period in Belgian Dance History.
A lot of today's Contemporary Choreographers
did their first steps on stage in this 'The Ballet
of the XXth century'. Ultima Vez was founded in 1986
as the company and
organization
of choreographer,
director and filmmaker Wim Vandekeybus. Also
in 1986 Jan Fabre
establishes Troubleyn. Home based
in Antwerp, Belgium,
it presents the work of Jan Fabre
and the Troubleyn Laboratorium.
Contemporary
Dance is the name given to a group of 20th
century performing dance forms. Contemporary
Dance is not a style, although the first
movements that were called Contemporary Dance
evolved from Modern and Postmodern
Dance. Unlike Ballet which
has it's origin in the Italian Renaissance,
and has strong vertical positions, Contemporary
Dance is all about gravity, centering, breath,
contraction, release, fall and recovery, emotions.
Belgian Contemporary
Dance scene was introduced by Alain
Platel in the performance: 'Bonjour Madame,
comment allez-vous aujourd'hui, il fait beau, Il va
sans doute pleuvoir.' in 1993.
It was the beginning of a long term colaboration with
Les Ballets C de la B.
After the Germans,
the French and the Japanese,
the newest group epitomizing the extraordinary worldwide
spurt in dance innovation comes from
Belgium, a country that has generally
had little impact upon dance history.
After Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, the revelation of
the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next
Wave Festival last year, there are others obviously
who have something to offer on their own.
