Northern Ohio residents will be treated to performances by five legendary titans of the dance world with FLY: Five First Ladies of Dance. The five mature women of color — groundbreaking dancers and choreographers — are widely revered for their pivotal influences on the contemporary dance art form.
The program was originally presented in May 2009 by 651 ARTS, a New York City-based organization committed to performance programming rooted in the African Diaspora. However, rapidly sold-out performances inspired the cast to reprise the program in a limited-performance tour. The Oberlin College concert is one of only four nationwide, and comes fresh on the heels of engagements at the Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.
“These five women – dance luminaries all – represent the best of the modern and contemporary dance… a tradition which gives voice to its practitioners and encourages them to break artistic and cultural boundaries,” said Nusha Martynuk, chair, Theater and Dance Program, Oberlin College. “As evidenced by these artists, Oberlin’s educational mission and the inclusiveness of the modern dance idiom come together in an expressive and thoughtful evening of dance. We invite the public, especially the local community, to join our faculty and students at this concert, and to participate in the educational events designed to provide community access to this very special residency.”
“These legendary dancers are first ladies in every sense of the word,” added Pamela Young, Executive Director of DanceCleveland. “Their vision, determination, passion and highly personal interpretations of the human condition continue to inspire generations of dancers.”Bebe Miller, noted for her cross-disciplinary explorations that have expanded the world of dance, will open the performance with Rain (1989), a moving piece in which she portrays a woman weighted down by cares but refusing to be crushed by them.

Frequently called the “doyenne of contemporary African dance,” Germaine Acogny uses video, an original score and a riveting solo performance to imagine an Africa with a powerful female president in her work.Dianne McIntyre will follow Acogny with her work, If You Don’t Know (2009), a piece inspired by three individuals who have greatly influenced her: Gwendolyn Nelson-Fleming, St. Clair Bourne and Lester Bowie. Featuring a dynamic movement style and the imaginative use of live music, the work is also a powerful tribute to her choreographic legacy. Pianist for McIntyre’s work is 1976 Oberlin College graduate George Caldwell.
Jawole Willa Jo Zollar seeks to illuminate the stories of women and men who are often forgotten with her work, Bring ’Em Home (2009). Zollar explores the New Orleans tradition of Second Line dancing while commenting on the moral implications of failed efforts to assist Hurricane Katrina victims.
About DanceCleveland
DanceCleveland is one of a handful of presenters nationally that are dedicated solely to the presentation of modern dance. The centerpiece of DanceCleveland’s programming is its annual performance series that is always surrounded by an array of educational outreach events designed to break artistic boundaries and provide community access to the dance aesthetic and dance luminaries that DanceCleveland brings to Northeast Ohio.

The Cornish Dance Theater Fall 2010 Concert features a Merce Cunningham minEvent alongside the choreography of Steve Casteel, Nancy Cranbourne, Iyun Harrison, and Tonya Lockyer. Modern dance icon Merce Cunningham’s minEvent is an uninterrupted sequence of excerpts drawn from three of his masterworks: Roaratorio (1983), Fabrications (1987), and Enter (1993) staged by former Merce Cunningham Dance Company member Patricia Lent during a three-week residency. Members of Cornish Dance Theater perform the minEvent to music by John Cage, performed live by Cornish’s Indeterminacy Ensemble and directed by Jarrad Powell. The performance is part of the Merce Cunningham minEvent Project 2010 – 2011, celebrating Cornish Alumnus Merce Cunningham.
Newest member of the Cornish dance faculty Iyun Harrison presents Meeting Ground, an exploration of the moments and spaces where divergent elements cross paths and collide. His dancers purposefully challenge ideals of beauty and taste in this athletic contemporary ballet. Nancy Cranbourne’s choreography draws audiences into the jazz medium in a way that is fun and undeniably funky. Her cast revels in the dance’s flirtatious moments just as much as the energetic, beat-driven ones.
Date and Timings: November 19 at 8pm and November 20 at 2pm and 8pm
Venue: Broadway Performance Hall, 1625 Broadway Avenue, Seattle
For more information call: 206.726.5011
Guest choreographer Tonya Lockyer’s dancers rock out to Radiohead in the pleated skirts and button-down shirts of students at a private school. Just like high school, the mood of the piec e sweeps from playful to bittersweet with movement ranging from serpentine to gestural. Seattle composer Ryan Love’s music sets off faculty member Steve Casteel’s contemporary work. Movement and music combine in an aggressive dance with moments of beautiful noise.
The Merce Cunningham minEvent Project 2010 – 2011 has been made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts as part of American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius, with additional support from The Boeing Company and the Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Foundation.
