The Bates Dance Festival brings together an international community of choreographers, performers, educators and students in a cooperative community to study, perform and create new work. The Festival offers a supportive atmosphere aimed at fostering a creative exchange of ideas, encouraging exploration of new ground and providing opportunities to experience a wide spectrum of dance/movement disciplines. Artists, students and audiences share their knowledge and inspiration through workshops, jams, discussions, informal showings and performances.
The Bates Dance Festival is comprised of four interwoven programs: two professional training programs including the Young Dancers Workshop (YDW), a rigorous three-week program serving pre-professional dancers ages 14-18; the Professional Training Program (PTP) serving dancers ages 18 and up; a main-stage performances series featuring renowned contemporary dance artists from around the world: and community outreach activities including the Youth Arts Program serving local youth ages 6-17 with dance and music training, and the Community Dance Project that invites local residents to participate in an intensive creative collaboration with a choreographer and Festival dancers which occurs on alternate years. Commissioning and residency projects support new works by established companies, emerging choreographers and international artists.

The manali winter festival has started with the fashion shows and western film dances at Manu Rangshala too are attracting youngsters. Around 60 folk dance groups from the state are participating in carnival besides 32 groups from other states of the country.
Exact dresses like Wearing ornaments and ancient woollen clothes, Himachali folk dance groups are capturing all the stages of town. No matter if youths vacillate to applaud their performances but tourists are cheering them with noisy claps.
“Festivals are the only way to explain the art and culture where folk dances should be given great attention. People should encourage those few artists who signify fading arts of country, otherwise most of us only condemn the old style by comparing it to modernity, advising people,” said a tourist couple from Karnataka, Banita and Shivanand Naganur.
Kullu hosts more than 500 fairs and festivals in a year where Himachali folk dance remains the principal item of programmes. “Same steps, dresses and music, we can’t tolerate all this in winter carnival, the main event of Kullu-Manali after Dussehra festivity,” “I’m happy that most of the local artists are performing on temporary built stages on Mall Road but outside the main auditorium,” Tilak added.
