Response to the Cultural Education Review

March 26th, 2012

Youth Dance England (YDE), the national organisation that champions and supports dance for children and young people is delighted that the Cultural Education Review has been published and welcomes its ambition to make the arts more accessible to young people.

In particular we agree with its focus on addressing the uneven provision in arts education, especially for dance which in many schools is only offered as a subsidiary to the PE curriculum. The majority of young people do not have access to specialist teachers who can introduce them to a wide dance education and help them progress in dance. 48% of schools offer dance to girls only*, thereby denying boys access to dance in school. We look forwards to hearing how these concerns are to be addressed through the National Curriculum Review.

We welcome the Review’s recommendation for the creation of a new National Youth Dance Company which will raise the profile and ambitions of youth dance across the country. It will build on YDE’s work that has created a nation-wide network for youth dance and our national programmes that provide opportunities for young people to perform, create and view dance. We have created a first UK-wide youth dance company in partnership with DU Dance in Northern Ireland, National Youth Dance Wales and YDance in Scotland, with the support of Southbank Centre, to celebrate and support talented young dancers. The company will première work that it has created with its Artistic Director Hofesh Shechter at U.Dance 2012 – YDE’s UK-wide youth dance festival taking place at Southbank Centre on 13-15 July 2012. We look forward to working on the creation of a new National Youth Dance Company for England.

It is important that young people, whatever their background, are able to progress into training for a professional dance career. YDE welcomes the recommendations for the support of conservatoires to train our most talented young dancers and continued investment in the Dance and Drama Awards, without which we cannot secure a future for dance in the UK and retain our world-class reputation for professional dance.

The former Coláiste Íde student and daughter of Brian and Toosie Cotter, Dingle, spoke to The Kerryman this week about the new business venture and the misconceptions many people have about pole-dancing in general.”Pole-dancing may have started in strip clubs, it is an important part of the history of the sport, but it is now considered as a mainstream form of fitness,” she explained. “With similarities to gymnastics it is a body and mind workout.”

According to Matilda, the fitness benefits of pole dancing are numerous. “Pole dancing requires strength, flexibility and grace of movement which is gained through the classes, practice and conditioning the body to the pole.

The Championship Competitions Of Cheer And Dance Seasons

March 12th, 2012

The great Fair Lawn High School Dance and Cheer leading teams wrapped up successful seasons over the past few weekends, taking fifth and seventh in their respective state dance championship competitions. But the thrill of the season for both squads was undoubtedly their first place finishes last month at the Spirit Unlimited Battle at the Boardwalk Cheer leading and Dance Nationals in Atlantic City.

In the season’s only event that both teams traveled to together, the excellent dance team took first in the hip-hop dance category while the cheer leading squad won the small-size intermediate level cheer category and earned the event’s Grand Champion designation, the highest honor across all competing teams.

Gimon compared dance events and cheer leading nationals competitions to college football bowl games, explaining that there are dozens of national’s competitions across the country which each caters to varying wonderful styles and skill levels. Gimon said the Spirit Unlimited event that Fair Lawn’s dance and cheer teams competed in this year was comparable to the one the team’s traveled to last year.
