Company Detail |
|
The Srijan India Dance Company was founded in 1989 by Bipasha GuptaRoy, to bring the dance form pioneered by the late Uday Shankar to a new generation of audiences outside India. Shankar began his career in dance as a partner of the great Russian ballerina, Anna Pavlova. In the 1920's he initiated a renaissance in Indian dance by inventing a style of his own. This dance style broke from the structured form of classical Indian dance by using creative movements to express contemporary themes and a variety of moods in a way that required no prior knowledge of Indian dance to be appreciated. The style reflected Shankar's belief that dance could be created out of anything and everything. Shankar's impact on Indian dance can be compared to that of Martha Graham's on modern American dance. |
